Prof. Marco Aurélio Vaz did his undergraduate training in Physical Education at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil (UFRGS) and completed his Doctorate in Kinesiology and Post-Doctorate in Musculoskeletal Biomechanics at the University of Calgary in Canada. He has been a professor in the area of Biomechanics and Kinesiology at the School of Physical Education, Physical Therapy and Dance from UFRGS since 1992. He is the past president of the Brazilian Society of Biomechanics (BSB, 2011-2013 and 2013-2015) and was a Member of the Executive Council of the International Society of Biomechanics (ISB, 2009-2015) and of the World Biomechanics Council (WCB, 2010-2022). His research interests are in the area of Neuromuscular Plasticity, with special focus on Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation. During his career he has used both human and animal models to understand how the musculoskeletal system adapts to decreased use, to training and to injury. He has published 220 manuscripts in scientific journals. Dr. Vaz is a Fellow of the International Society of Biomechanics (Class of 2021) and has been awarded the Honorary Membership from the Chilean Society of Movement Sciences. He has helped to develop and consolidate the Brazilian Society of Biomechanics, and he has the honor to be the President of the XXIV ISB Congress that was held for the first time in Brazil and Latin America in 2013.
